Welcome to the Dr. Leroy E. Mayo School
Dear Mayo Community:
Welcome to Mayo School. The Mayo School prides itself on being a caring and joyful learning community that supports open and positive communication, trust, and respect among all of its members: students, parents and staff. We are a community that cares about its children, their families, and its teachers. We enjoy learning and working hard together and know that when this occurs, the possibilities for success are limitless.
Our goal is to provide an environment in which our core values are practiced everyday. These values are simple to understand; the challenge is to rigorously adhere to them. They include the following beliefs: 1) learning is a life-long process, 2) we strive to reach our maximum potential and recognize the importance of supporting each other, 3) we need to listen and learn from one another, 4) each of us is a unique individual, worthy of respect, acceptance and consideration, 5) we behave in a manner that maintains safety of ourselves and others and 6) our school community is part of the larger community and we need to take an active role in both. In order to maintain these core values, it is critically important to have open and positive home-school communication.
The Mayo School is committed to addressing and eliminating issues of bullying. It is the right of every member of our community to feel safe both physically and emotionally. We do not believe that this can be accomplished by simply hanging posters or holding the occasional anti-bullying assembly, but rather by a whole school approach to bullying. It is not a one year initiative, but rather a commitment to the belief that teasing, excluding, name-calling and physical threats are unacceptable and will not be ignored.
Please keep this handbook as a reference to Mayo’s programs and policies. We believe that policies and procedures should strike a balance between the individual’s need for free expression and the school community’s need for safety and order.
Sincerely, Judy Evans Principal |
