June 2018

Dear Parents or Guardians,

We would like to welcome you and your child/children to third grade. We are looking forward to an exciting and productive year.  Here are the expectations for children entering Grade 3.

READING: During the summer, your child/children need to read at least one fiction chapter book, one picture book and at least one non-fiction book of their choice.  Your child should read each week.  Please have your child complete the attached summer book log (attached below) and bring it to school on the first day.  This helps us to learn some of your child’s interests and allows us to connect with your child more easily.  Your child should also plan to bring in their favorite summer read the first week of school for an in-school project.

MATH:  There is a very short review of addition and subtraction in the first few weeks of school.  Students are expected to have mastered their addition and subtraction math facts through 20 upon entering third grade.  To prevent the summer slide your child should practice these facts each week.  Please have your child complete the attached summer math fact log (attached below) and bring it to school on the first day.  One of our favorite sites we use here is XtraMath.org which gives individualized fact practice in under 10 minutes a day!

SUPPLIES: You will find a list of supplies that your child/children will need for the year.  Please send these supplies in with your child/children the first week of school.

Attached to this letter you will find the summer reading and math logs, a list of suggested authors of children’s books that are grade appropriate, as well as some websites that can help your child practice math facts in a fun and enjoyable way.

Have a wonderful summer. See you in August!
